All that we have is today. That’s it. Tomorrow isn’t promised and the past is behind us. Every day that we wake up as healthy human beings is a gift. A gift that all too often, we take for granted.
Our lives are built around the future. When we are young, we are asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” When we grow up, we are asked, “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” It seems as though everything we are doing in this present moment should be contributing to our future. It’s not good enough to live life one day at a time. We are forced to constantly look ahead and have a concrete, detailed, well-thought-out plan. Our plan is our future. The future is where we put our hopes and dreams. The future is where everything we can imagine is real. The future is better. But the future is an illusion.
At any moment, your entire life can change. The future that you have spent your entire life planning and creating can disappear in a second. The safe haven where you stashed all your deepest desires can crumble in a moment. The fantasies that you have imagined since childhood can vanish in an instant. It’s scary to realize that the place where we store so many parts of our souls is fragile and perishable.
All that we have is today. We need to take everything that we have tucked away in the future and bring it into the present. We should say the things we’ve always wanted to say, do the things we’ve always wanted to do, and live the life we’ve always dreamed of. At the end of this day, the only day we can be sure of, we’ll lay our heads on our pillows and smile, a deep, pure, happy smile; because this is our life and we decided to live it.
“But peace can be made only by those who are peaceful, and love can only be shown by those who love. No work of love will flourish out of guilt, fear, or hollowness of heart, just as no valid plans for the future can be made by those who have no capacity for living now.”
When we change our mindset to one that is founded on the belief that this day, these 24 hours, is all that we have, we realize that life is too short to be anything but happy. Every time you wake up in the morning, decide that today is the best thing to ever happen. And on this great day, make sure to do all the things that bring you joy. Choose happiness over everything else and watch how your life evolves.
"Take time to do what makes your soul happy."
The purpose behind creating a happiness list is that we are able to easily reflect on what makes us smile. This will help remind us that our lives are too short to not do whatever brings us joy.
