Bliss Crafter, Austin Yoga Tree
For this week's Mindful Monday post, we are interviewing the lovely Michelle Norris! Michelle is one of Austin Yoga Tree's experienced yoga instructors. Make sure to check out her Hatha For All class (8:00 am Tuesday/Thursday). Without further ado, let's learn more about Michelle.
Tell us about your yoga journey!
I started yoga with my sister. We both had stressful jobs and instead of meeting for lunch we would meet for the lunch hour class every week. We really just fell in love with the tea and the teacher’s uncanny ability to make us laugh while in the most compromising, challenging and uncomfortable positions. From then on I knew yoga would be woven into the fabric of my life. If you would have told me I would become a teacher I would have laughed; maybe even thought you were crazy! I couldn’t sit back on my heels or even child’s pose without wincing. I enjoyed challenging the physical body coupled with learning how to breathe. There is nothing like it.
Why do you practice yoga?
The amazing thing about practice whether its asana or ‘insert your passion’ is if you listen closely or even turn the volume up on your awareness you learn so much about yourself. Dedication inspires growth and inner knowledge. From there the path is carved. Practice is where you get to explore, learn, and play. It’s a place to fall and pick yourself back up. Practice encourages being uncomfortable and learning how to handle those uncomfortable moments.
What is your pose of the moment and why?
I love standing on my head, hands, forearms, or pretty much anything that allows me to turn my world upside down. I love the word balance and struggling with the art of balancing on one foot to the point of laughing frustration.
You just got out of a soulful, sweaty yoga class, what do you do next?
Head straight for the tea of course. If it was a heart opening class I sing at the top of my lungs and annoy everyone around me.
What is one thing on your bucket list?
See as many places as I am fortunate to have the opportunity to and serve.
What is one goal that you are currently working towards?
My intentions list is long. Being a full on listener and reminding myself it is better to be kind than to be right. Oh Oh oh and to come from a place of curiosity :)
What is your spirit animal?
I have no earthly clue – I have a strong energetic pull towards elephants.
What does the word “mindful” mean to you?
How long do you want this answer to read? HA. Simply – Aware.
